New Japan Cup 2022 Semifinals and Finals


It's that time of year again, denizens of the OI zone. Your second favorite annual tournament in the wrestling world, the New Japan Cup semifinals and finals! Last year's tournament featured 30 men, whereas this years started off with 48 from both the Heavyweight and Jr Heavyweight divisions. It was only just recently that 2021 New Japan Cup winner Will Ospreay submitted to Zack Sabre Jr. The repeat will not be happening, but the man who Ospreay beat in those 2021 finals, Shingo Takagi has advanced to the semi finals. His opponent will be Zack Sabre Jr. Again, the repeat robbery. Expectations subverted AF. On the other side of the semifinal picture lies a match that has happened many times before and if one sets aside biases, never disappoints. Tetsuya Naito will face NJPW World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada for the other half of the final bout. 




It's a fine final four, as any OIster would surely attest to. That is what's good for Friday night/Saturday morning's semifinal matches, but what could the makeup of the finals look like? Could we see a Rainmaker vs a leg breaker? Or is the Rainmaker poised to deliver receipts for his first round loss to Rampage Dragon, Shingo Takagi. Perhaps Tetsuya Naito is destined to tear it upon the mat with ZSJ once more. If that happens turn your speakers up, dickheads. Or could it be an ungovernable clash among Los Ingobernales de Japon stablemates Naito and Takagi? 

Other matches scheduled for Saturday see the continued fallout from Bullet Club's betrayal of the Guerillas of Destiny, a tag match teasing the upcoming Jr Heavyweight Championship match between El Desperado, the return of #STRONGHEARTS in three on three action, and more. Tune in tonight a few hours after Smackdown and Rampage at 3 AM ET for the Semifinals of the New Japan Cup! The finals will be airing on Saturday night/Sunday morning at 1 AM ET. No matches outside the Finals have been confirmed for then, but they will be added as we learn more in the hours after the Semifinals.

Pour up if you're still up, we're watching the New Japan Cup tonight! The next Premium Live Events will be airing 7 days and 12 hours later, starting with NXT 2.0: Stand and Deliver, almost immediately followed by Wrestlemania 38 Night One. I'm sorry I wasn't able to organize the New Japan Cup bracket contest in time. Until then, the Orient Interference Championship will be held in abeyance, but rest assured that next weekend, the Outside Interference Waffle House World Championship, OI Tag Team Championship, and OI World Championship will all be on the line!
